Character Descriptions
Below is a list of the protagonists and their descriptions. For many of the descriptions, I just quoted directly from the book. For a few, I just quoted certain phrases. You can find a list of love interests and secondary characters by clicking on the appropriate links at the bottom of the page. Those descriptions will be generally less detailed.
Lana Johnson
Shani Tucker
Very pretty, very thin, very long curly “raven”-colored hair and small breasts. Her eyes are “dawn’s darkest, clearest blue, like large, round mountain lakes an hour before sunrise” and she has “glowing skin” and an “innocent, pondering profile” reminiscent of Natalie Wood.

Alison Parker
“Her black hair was long, curly and unmanageable---contrasting nicely with her fair complexion. Throughout her freshman and sophomore years, she had worried about her small breasts but since Nastassja Kinski had become a big star and the guys had flipped over the curve of her hips---Alison figured she could have doubled for her from the neck down---the concern diminished. Her face was another story; nobody looked like her. She couldn’t make up her mind whether that was good or bad. Her dark eyes were big and round and she had a wide mouth, but the rest of the ingredients were at odds with each other: a button nose, a firm jaw, a low forehead, thick eyebrows---it was amazing Nature had salvaged a human face out of the collection. Quite often, however, complete strangers would stop her in stores and tell her she was beautiful. Depending on her mood, she would either believe or disbelieve them. Not that she ever felt a compulsion to wear a bag over her head. Plenty of guys asked her out.”

Tony Hunt
Blond hair, blue eyes, “built like an ox”. Chain Letter by Christopher Pike © 1986, P. 16
Melanie Martin
“Before the Dark Ages, her mother had said that she was a born aristocrat, and it was true her face was finely structured. The stress of the divorce had caused her to lose weight, making her cheeks somewhat hollow, and this served to emphasize her delicate appearance. Her hair was auburn, short, and shiny, cut in bangs that almost brushed her deep-set hazel eyes. When the sun was bright, her skin dotted with freckles, and after the past summer quite a few were gathered around her nose. Her lips were her best feature. A deep rosy red and heart -shaped---she seldom used lipstick. Sadly, her teeth, particularly the bottom row, were crooked. When she smiled, she kept her mouth shut. Also, she was short, five two in heels.”

Jane Retton
”She had an interesting face. There was none of the frivolousness he had glimpsed in the others. Staring at her blue eyes, set deep beneath her shiny brown bangs, he wondered why she had chosen not to smile for the camera. Although she did not possess the obvious beauty of Alice and Patty, there was something alluring in the way she held her head; she seemed to be keeping herself apart from her surroundings. And yet, at the same time, she looked somehow very vulnerable.”

Cindy Jones
Tan with “light blond hair”. “She had a nice figure---she could admit it to herself without having to be an egomaniac---and her face wasn’t bad, either. Her eyes were a deep blue and she shared Alex’s clearly defined chin, which was the current ideal for beauty in Hollywood. Jason had once told her she looked like the girl next door. The compliment fit. She was the wholesome type.”

Carl Timmons
Sharon McKay
”Sharon had an interesting face. The line of her jaw was perhaps a shade too square, and her nose had a slight bump on it, but her smile was so winning and her brown eyes so warm that guys adored her. She definitely had a sexy body, and much of her allure lay in the way she used it to do the simplest of things, like crossing the campus at lunch. Although short---she was only five feet---she walked with confidence that said she knew exactly where she was going.”

Mark Forum
Nice-looking. Dark curls and "deep and intelligent" eyes. He is "underweight". But he feels he doesn't have the right personality to attract girls.

Julia Florence
Herb Trasker
"He didn't fool himself into thinking he was handsome, and it was just as well. He stood six-foot-one and weighed in at a hundred and forty pounds. His brown hair was long, unkept, and he couldn't run a comb through it without tearing clumps out."

Jean Fiscal
"Jean was tan---she went to the beach often---and had classic California good looks. Her smile was absurdly bright. Her dad had never given her a penny of allowance while she was growing up, but he had sent her to an expensive orthodontist. Her hair was very shiny, and she wore it long, straight down her back. Both Ted and Bob had commented on the softness of her brown eyes. Apparently, she looked sweet even when she was about to explode in anger, which she did only when someone tried to take advantage of her. She was nobody's fool, except perhaps when it came to boys, who, of course, she could never get to take advantage of her."

Roxanne
"My hair was long and red, my eyes green and bright---a nice combination. I was too thin---I had no tits---but even girlfriends complimented me on my legs. Those same girls, however, said I didn't smile enough. Melancholy Rox. I didn't like to smile because of my teeth. They were crooked, and didn't shine like those of the actresses on TV."

Marvin Summers
Angela Warner
Short (brown?) hair, blue eyes, "slight and had trouble gaining weight, probably because she seldom ate much."
Monster by Christopher Pike, p. 29
Teresa Chafey
"She was five six, thin with great legs and clear skin. Her breasts were on the small side, but fit her well. Her brown hair was light enough that she passed as a blond in the summer. Overall her face was pretty enough, in a natural California fashion. Yet the bruiselike circles under her eyes betrayed her recent traumas. Her lips were lush. She smiled a lot, too much; the smile was more a nervous reflex than an expression of joy. Her blue eyes were clear skies; her dark eyebrows clouds on the horizon. Her nose was a shade too big for her face, and it kept her from being truly beautiful. She had considered having it fixed, but then decided that she didn't need to be beautiful. Of course, that was a lie. She occasionally told them to herself, just small ones, white lies that didn't do anybody any harm. The truth was she would have given a great deal to have been irresistable. Then Bill would have still wanted her."
